Microstructure is everything in materials, and especially ceramics, because so many properties are profoundly affected by the balance of grain scale, morphology and porosity. Scientists are fascinated by the beauty of nature's own microstructures and patterns such as found in nacre and mollusk shells. By mimicking these materials we seek to derive materials of similar characteristics. In this talk I give two cases where microstructure control by the templated grain growth process leads to unique ceramic materials. In the first case I discuss the processing-microstructure-property relations of highly textured PMN-PT piezoelectric ceramics processing by templated grain growth. The second case will show how we can use both crystallographic orientation control and spatial dopant deposition to obtain microstructured 3D alumina-based microstructures having unusual fracture resistance.
講演者のGary L. Meesing 教授は、現在 Pennsylvania State University のDepartment of Materials Science and Engineering のHeadで、Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Science and Engineering です。2002年から2003年まで、The American Ceramic Society のPresident をつとめられました。セラミックスプロセシング全般、特に液相や気相からの粉体合成、相転移、焼結体の微構造制御に関する研究で多数の研究業績があります。今回は粒成長制御による圧電セラミックス、構造用セラミックスの特性制御について御紹介頂きます。 - 問合せ先:中島 章 内線2525
